The Rivalry
Yankees-Red Sox. The two most iconic franchises in Major League Baseball. The two teams that share a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The two teams that have won a combined 27 World Series titles. The two teams that are currently locked in one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports. And the two teams that are set to face off against each other in the AL East this season.
The History
The Yankees and the Red Sox, two of the most successful teams in baseball history, have been bitter rivals since Boston first fielded a professional team in 1901. The Red Sox won the first World Series in 1903, but the Yankees have been dominant since 1917, when they acquired Babe Ruth from the Red Sox. New York has won 27 World Series championships, while Boston has won only 11.
The two teams have met 2,427 times since 1903, with the Yankees winning 1,271 games and the Red Sox winning 1,156. The Yankees have also won more divisional titles (40) and pennants (39) than any other team in baseball history.

The Red Sox
manager John Farrell will have to juggle a number of different factors as he looks to get his team back on track in the AL East. The first is the health of two of his most important players, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz. Both are battling nagging injuries that have hampered their production all season long. Ortiz is currently nursing a sore Achilles tendon, while Pedroia is dealing with a wrist injury that has caused him to miss time in recent weeks. Farrell will need to get both players healthy if the Red Sox are going to make a push for the division title.
In addition to the health of his star players, Farrell will also need to find a way to get more production out of his starting rotation. The Red Sox currently have the worst ERA in the majors, and they will need to turn things around if they want to contend for a playoff spot. Farrell will likely use a combination of young guns like Eduardo Rodriguez and old reliable veterans like Clay Buchholz in an effort to right the ship.
Finally, Farrell will need to find a way to get his team to score more runs. The Red Sox are currently averaging just 3.7 runs per game, which is good for dead last in the majors. Ortiz and Pedroia are both having down years offensively, and the rest of the lineup has struggled to pick up the slack. The Game
The game of baseball is the great equalizer. No matter how good or bad a team is, on any given day, any team can beat any other team. That’s what makes baseball so special. The Yankees are a good team, and the Red Sox are a good team. But the Yankees are better. They have more wins, more championships, and more history.
The Pitching
The Yankees have some great pitchers on their team, and if they want to beat the Red Sox, they’re going to need to use them to their advantage.
One of the Yankees’ best pitchers is Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka is a right-handed starting pitcher who has a lot of experience pitching in big games. He’s also been very successful against the Red Sox in his career, so the Yankees will definitely want to start him in this series.

The Yankees also have a left-handed reliever named Zach Britton who has been dominant against left-handed hitters throughout his career. This could be key in getting outs against some of the Red Sox’ best hitters, like J.D. Martinez and Andrew Benintendi.
If the Yankees can use their pitching staff to their advantage, they definitely have a chance to beat the Red Sox in this series.
The Hitting
The big difference between the Yankees and Red Sox right now is that the Yankees are hitting and the Red Sox are not. The Sox seem to think they can win with two or three runs a game, but that isn’t going to get it done against good teams. The Yankees, on the other hand, have been scoring runs in bunches lately. They scored ten runs in a game twice last week, and they put up nine runs on Sunday against the Blue Jays.
The Yankees have a lineup full of hitters who are capable of putting up big numbers. They have shown that they can score runs against anyone, regardless of who is pitching. The only way the Red Sox are going to be able to keep up with them is if they start scoring some runs of their own.
The Fielding
