The team’s dynasty years
The Yankees’ dynasty years refers to the period from 1936 to 1964 when the Yankees dominated baseball. The team won an unprecedented 10 World Series titles and 16 American League pennants during that time. Many of baseball’s greatest players, such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle, played for the Yankees during this period. The team’s success was due in part to its strong farm system, which produced many of the great Yankee players.
The team’s decline
After a dynasty that saw the Yankees win five World Series titles in a span of just over a decade, the team’s fortunes began to decline in the early 1960s. The Bronx Bombers lost the 1962 World Series to the San Francisco Giants, and then failed to make it back to baseball’s biggest stage for a decade. In 1964, the Yankees suffered perhaps their most crushing defeat in franchise history, blowing a 3-1 lead against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. New York would finally recapture the championship in 1977, but by then many of the team’s star players from its previous dynasty were gone or nearing the end of their careers.

The team’s resurgence
The Yankees’ success in the late 1990s and early 2000s was due in part to their strong farm system. During this timeframe, the Yankees produced many homegrown All-Stars, such as Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, and Andy Pettitte. These homegrown players formed the core of a team that would go on to win four World Series Championships in five years (1996, 1998–2000).
