How the Yankees Got to the ALCS
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx in New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles. In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
They won the AL East
The Yankees clinched their spot in the ALCS by winning the AL East with a 100-62 record. They finished 8.5 games ahead of the second-place Red Sox. The Yankees went 5-2 against the Astros in the regular season.
They swept the Twins in the ALDS
The New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 8-2 in Game 3 of the ALDS on Monday night, completing a sweep of their best-of-five series.
It’s the third straight year the Yankees have advanced to the ALCS, and they’ll now face the winner of Tuesday’s Game 4 between the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays. The Astros currently lead that series 2-1.
The Yankees haven’t lost a postseason series since the 2017 ALDS against the Cleveland Indians, winning eight straight series. They’ll look to continue that streak when they take on either the Astros or Rays in the ALCS later this week.
How the Astros Got to the ALCS
On September 29th, the last day of the baseball season, the Yankees were one win away from clinching the AL East title. The Astros, meanwhile, had clinched the AL West and were resting most of their starters in preparation for the playoffs.
They won the AL West
The Houston Astros won the American League West division title for the third consecutive year in 2019. They then went on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, before losing to the eventual World Series champion Washington Nationals in the ALCS.
How many games did they play against each team in order to get to the ALCS?
In order to win the AL West, the Astros played 162 games total. Of those, they played 19 against the Seattle Mariners, 29 against the Los Angeles Angels, 27 against the Oakland Athletics, and 87 against their divisional rivals, the Texas Rangers.
In order to get to the ALCS, they first had to win the ALDS. In that series, they played 5 games total. They played 2 games against the Tampa Bay Rays at home in Houston, and 3 games on the road in Tampa.
So in total, they played 191 games over the course of the entire 2019 season: 162 regular season games and 29 postseason games.
They beat the Rays in the ALDS
The Astros advanced to the American League Championship Series for the second time in three years with a 6-1 victory over the Rays in Game 5 of the ALDS on Thursday night at Minute Maid Park.
It was a dominant performance by Justin Verlander, who struck out 10 batters in seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. The Astros’ offense also woke up in a big way, scoring six runs on 13 hits.
George Springer and Jose Altuve each had three hits, while Yuli Gurriel and Carlos Correa had two hits apiece. The Astros will now head to New York to take on the Yankees in the ALCS, which begins on Saturday.
