2000-present

From 2000 to present, the Yankees have won the World Series four times:
-2000
-2009
-1998
-1999

1990-1999

The Yankees won the World Series in 1990, 1996, and 1998. They lost in 1991, 1992, and 1999.

1980-1989

The Yankees won the World Series in 1980, led by World Series MVP and future Hall of Famer Willie Randolph. They defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. The Yankees also won the World Series in 1981, defeating the Dodgers in six games. This would be the last time the Yankees would win a World Series for almost a decade. The Yankees won the American League East division crowns in 1982 and 1983 but lost both years to the Milwaukee Brewers in the ALCS. In 1984, they missed the playoffs entirely for the first time since 1974. The 1985 season was marked by tragedy, as Yankees owner George Steinbrenner had a heart attack during baseball’s All-Star break. Despite this, Steinbrenner remained active in running the team on a day-to-day basis.

The team rebounded from its disappointing 1984 campaign and finished first in the AL East with a 103-59 record in 1985 behind AL MVP Don Mattingly. However, they lost to eventual World champions Kansas City Royals in seven games in the ALCS despite holding a 3-1 lead at one point. In 1986, despite having one of baseball’s best starting rotations anchored by future Hall of Famer inducing Ron Guidry (who went 18-8 with a 2.85 ERA that year), but an anemic offense limited them to 89 wins and second place behind Toronto Blue Jays en route to another ALCS loss, again to Kansas City Royals (this time in seven games).

The team failed to make it back to postseason play over next four seasons as they posted similar win totals of 87 and 88 wins respectively during 1987 and 1988 campaigns while finishing third behind Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays respectively during those seasons before posting an 89-73 record during 1989 which saw them again finish third behind Toronto Blue Jays who set a then major league record with 99 victories while Detroit Tigers won their fourth consecutive AL East title that year en route to eventually winning their second consecutive World Series championship that year resulting Yankee owner George Steinbrenner firing Lou Piniella after four seasons as manager of Yankees and replacing him with Dallas Green

1970-1979

The Yankees won the World Series in 1977 and 1978, led by Reggie Jackson, who was named the Series MVP on both occasions. In both years, the Yankees faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic. The 1977 Series was particularly memorable, as it featured a dramatic home run by Jackson in Game 6, which came to be known as “the Shot Heard ‘Round the World”.
