The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations, and moved it to New York City, renaming the team the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the Yankees in 1913.

The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, more than any other team in baseball. They also appeared in 40 World Series, also more than any other team.
Why have they been so successful?
The Yankees have been successful for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they have always been able to field a competitive team. They have also benefited from playing in a large market, which has allowed them to generate more revenue than most other teams. This has allowed them to sign some of the best players in the league, which has in turn led to more success on the field.
