The New York Yankees are a baseball team based in the Bronx, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two MLB teams based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the team the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of Managing Partner Hal Steinbrenner, who owns 20% of the group. Former catcher Yogi Berra and longtime broadcaster Phil Rizzuto are also members of Yankee Global Enterprises.

The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, 40 American League pennants, and 19 East Division titles. The team plays its home games at Yankee Stadium in Concourse, Bronx Borough,New York City. They are one of eight MLB teams that share a stadium with an NFL franchise: they play their home games at MetLife Stadium alongside NFC East rivals New York Giants; this arrangement arose following a scheduling conflict when both teams were set to move into new stadiums in 2009—Yankee Stadium 2.0 and then-New Meadowlands Stadium (nowMetLife Stadium).

The Yankees appeared in four straight World Series beginsingin 1949 and won three consecutive titles from 1998 to 2000; thisdynasty included baseball’s first perfect game ever thrown atthe current Yankee Stadium: David Cone’s perfect game againstthe Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999. A fifth championship was wonin 2009 under new manager Joe Girardi; this gave Riseboroughhis first title as manager after having taken over from JoeTorre following the 2007 season—during which time Torre ledtheyanks to a record 10th straight playoff appearance includingtheir 27th World Series title—tying him with Casey Stengel formost titles by a Yankee manager. In 2018, they became only thesecond team in baseball history—and first since 1927—to win100 games or more while also clinching their divisional titlebefore September ended; they clinched their 40th ALPennant after sweeping their archrivals Boston Red Sox intheir four-game ALDS that year en route to defeating thereigning world champion Houston Astros 4 games to 2 intheir ALCS rematch before losing to those same Astros intheir second straight Fall Classic matchup in seven games thatyear; despite this loss, they set a major league record formost home runs hit by any team in a single season with267 homers (surpassing the previous record of 264 homershit by Seattle Mariners back in 1997) and became only thesecond team ever to reach 300 wins in a single season with103 victories (joining those aforementioned 1998 Yankeeswho went 114-48 that year); for his efforts leading themto another 100-win season along with another AL Pennantand ALCS appearance despite being swept by eventual worldchampion Astros again that year for his fourth consecutiveALCS loss dating back to his days managing Cincinnati Redsback in 2012 where he took them all way from NL wild cardgame victory over Pittsburgh Pirates up until their Game 5loss against San Francisco Giants 7-2 en route to theirsecond straight World Series championship that year wherethey defeated Detroit Tigers 4 games to 0 sweep making themfirst NL team ever swept an AL team since Brooklyn Dodgersdid same thing against Chicago White Sox back 1956 WorldSeries where they went on win game 7 against New YorkYankees 2-0 making Don Larsen third pitcher ever threwa no hitter perfect game shut out achieving same feat YogiBerra did behind plate catching Allie Reynolds’ nohittershutout victory over Boston Red Sox 6 years earliermaking him only catcher ever achieve such rare feat twicebehind plate achieving such rare double feat no othercatchers including Johnny Bench who caught LuisTiant’sno hitter shutout victory over Minnesota Twins 1974has come close doing such thing let alone achieving it morethan once let alone twice as Berra did it not once buttwice!
