The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National League (NL).

New York Yankees: The Early Years

The New York Yankees were founded in 1901, when the American League was created as a second major league to compete with the National League. The Yankees were one of eight original teams that began play in the new league. They were originally known as the Baltimore Orioles, but when they moved to New York prior to the start of the 1903 season, they took on their new name.

The early years of the Yankees were not particularly successful. They finished in last place in their first season and did not make it to the World Series for another 29 years. But by the late 1920s, they had built a team that would dominate baseball for much of the next two decades.

The Yankees first won the World Series in 1923, led by Babe Ruth, who hit a then-record 60 home runs that season. They went on to win three more titles in 1927, 1928 and 1932. After a few lean years, they won another three consecutive World Series from 1936 to 1938, led by Ruth and fellow slugger Lou Gehrig.

Ruth and Gehrig were part of what was known as the “Murderer’s Row” lineup of 1927, which is widely considered one of the greatest collections of talent on one team in baseball history. Ruth retired after the 1935 season and Gehrig’s career ended tragically two years later when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is now commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease.”

New York Yankees: The Golden Era

The late ’90s and early 2000s were a historic time for the New York Yankees. A team that was already a dynasty became an even more dominant force, winning four World Series titles in five years. Yankees fans will never forget those teams, and neither will fans of other teams. Those were some of the most dominant, talented, and entertaining squads baseball has ever seen.
