Introduction

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers are two of the most storied franchises in baseball history. These two teams have faced off against each other in some of the most memorable moments in the sport, and they have been home to some of the greatest players to ever step on a diamond.

While there have been many great players who have donned the uniforms of both teams, there are a select few who have had the unique distinction of playing for both the Yankees and the Tigers. In this article, we will take a look at some of these players and their careers with both teams.

Players Who Played for the Yankees

The New York Yankees are a Major League Baseball team that has been around since 1901. The Yankees have had some of the best players in baseball history, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. The Yankees have also won 27 World Series titles, which is more than any other team in baseball.

Babe Ruth

George Herman Ruth Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), nicknamed “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swing”, was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Ruth initially gained fame as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, although he also played as an outfielder and first baseman. His big break came when he was sold to the Yankees in 1919. With 26 Group 1 regular-season home runs, Ruth helped lead the Yankees to their first World Series championship that year. His home run output increased dramatically over the course of his career; as pitcher-only players Henry Lou Gehrig and Alex Rodriguez would later show, this led both to records for grand slams by a player in a single season and career.

Mickey Mantle

Mantle played his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees as a center fielder and first baseman, following in the footsteps of his father, Mutt Mantle, who also played for the Yankees. Mantle was one of the best players and sluggers in baseball history, and is regarded by many as the greatest switch hitter of all time. Mantle was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974 and was selected for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999.

Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra was an American professional baseball player who played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1946 to 1963, all but the last for the New York Yankees. He was an 18-time All-Star and won 10 World Series championships as a member of the Yankees. Berra is one of only four players to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award three times and is one of only six managers to win both the National League and American League pennants. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history.

Players Who Played for the Tigers

In this section, we will take a look at some of the players who have played for both the Yankees and the Tigers. We will discuss their career stats and how they fared with each team.

Ty Cobb

American professional baseball player Ty Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers from 1905 to 1928. He is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Hank Greenberg

Arguably the greatest slugger in Detroit Tigers history, Hank Greenberg was immensely popular in the city during the 1930s and 1940s. Greenberg was born to a Jewish family in New York, but he grew up in Detroit and played for the Tigers from 1930 to 1946. He was a five-time All-Star and won two World Series titles with the team. After his playing career, Greenberg served as the general manager of the Tigers from 1948 to 1956. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956.

Al Kaline

Al Kaline (born December 19, 1934), nicknamed “Mr. Tiger”, is an American former professional baseball right fielder who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kaline played his entire major league career with Detroit and was selected to 18 All-Star Games and 10 World Series. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980, his first year of eligibility.

Kaline was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Southern High School and signed a professional contract with the Tigers at age 18 in 1953. He made his MLB debut in June 1953 and was assigned to minor league Tulsa before being promoted to Detroit late in the season. He won Rookie of the Year honors after hitting .276 with 20 home runs in 1954. The following year he won his first batting title after hitting .340 and led the major leagues in hits for the second time; he also led Detroit to their first World Series championship since 1908. From 1957 to 1959 he won three consecutive Gold Glove Awards then suffered serious injuries from a pair of outfield collisions which caused him to have off years for 1960 and 1961 while he recovered; he still managed to finish among the top-ten outfielders all four years despite playing below average defense during those two seasons. After rejoining the Tigers’ lineup full-time over 1962–1963 he won a fourth batting title and helped lead them to another championship during 1968; injuries again limited his effectiveness over 1974 which prompted his retirement from playing at age 39.”
