NBC Sports Network ( NBCSN) is an American pay television channel that is owned by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) division of NBCUniversal. It originally launched on July 1, 1995, as the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), which was focused on programming primarily involving fishing, camping, hunting, and outdoor adventure programs. By 2011, OLN became mainly a niche cable channel with only a small amount of carryover programming from its days as OLN. In September 2011, Comcast acquired a majority interest in NBC Universal from General Electric, which resulted in the creation of the joint venture NBC Sports Group that month. As a result of the acquisition, hip hop music videos were dropped from OLN’s programming lineup and replaced with sports highlights shows and live events such as The Contender and 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches (airing under the banner “MLS Futbol Nights”), which led to OLN being rebranded as Versus in September 2006. On January 2, 2012, Versus was reformed as an American sports-oriented cable channel known as NBC Sports Network to reflect these changes; the network formally adopted its new on-air branding that day during an extensive on-air rollout across all its properties (replacing “The Contender” with coverage of 2011 NHL Winter Classic). As of February 2015, NBCSN is available to approximately 81 million pay television households (70.2% of households with at least one television set) in the United States.
