The New York Yankees–Boston Red Sox rivalry is a Major League Baseball (MLB) rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The two teams have competed in MLB’s American League (AL) for over 100 seasons and have since developed one of the fiercest rivalries in American sports.

The two teams have met 2,224 times since 1901, with the Yankees holding a 1,271-949 edge. They’ve also met 11 times in the postseason, with the Yankees winning seven of those series.

The rivalry began in 1901, when the Red Sox were known as the Boston Americans and the Yankees were known as the New York Highlanders. The two teams met for the first time on April 26, with the Highlanders winning 3-2. Since then, they’ve played each other 2,425 times.

The Yankees have won more than twice as many games as the Red Sox, but Boston has won more World Series titles (nine to New York’s seven). The most famous moment in the rivalry came in 2004, when the Red Sox ended their 86-year drought and won the World Series after coming back from a 0-3 deficit against their hated rivals.
