The MLB season is winding down, and the race for the divisional titles is heating up. But what if the Yankees and Red Sox end up with the same record? What happens then?
Checkout this video:
If the Yankees and Red Sox Tie
First and foremost, if the Yankees and Red Sox were to tie for the AL East title, they would both advance to the playoffs. If the Yankees and Red Sox were to finish the season with the same record, the Yankees would win the AL East title because they would have a better head-to-head record against the Red Sox. In addition, if the Yankees and Red Sox were to finish the season with the same record, the Yankees would have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs because they would have a better record than the Red Sox.
What would happen if the Yankees and Red Sox tied for the AL East title?
The top two teams in each division (American and National League) make it to the playoffs. If the Yankees and Red Sox were to tie for first place in the AL East, they would play each other in a one-game playoff to determine who would go on to the American League Division Series (ALDS).
How would the tiebreaker game be played?
The first tiebreaker would be played in Fenway Park on October 10th, the day after the scheduled end of the regular season. The second tiebreaker, if necessary, would be played in Yankee Stadium on October 11th.
Here are the rules for tiebreaker games:
-Each tied club shall designate two pitchers who shall be eligible to pitch in the tiebreaker game or games. A pitcher who is not on a club’s active roster at the end of the regular season (excluding any disabled list) is not eligible to pitch in a tiebreaker game. A pitcher who appears on a club’s disabled list at any time during September but who has not been reinstated from such disabled list prior to the conclusion of his club’s final regular season game shall also be ineligible to pitch that tiebreaker game or games. Any other pitcher is eligible to appear in a tiebreaker game, even if he has been acquired by his club from another Major League organization during September or after the conclusion of his club’s final regular season contest, provided that he was not on such other Major League organization’s disabled list at any time during September.
-The home team for eachtiebreaker game shall have last batting practice.
-During any extra inning period of a tiebreaker game, each team shall begin its turn at bat when its offensive half of the inning begins with no one out and no runner(s) on base (even if there are runner(s) still remaining from an earlier half-inning).
That covers most situations that could come up during the end of the season and ensures that both teams would have a fair chance to win the division title.
Who would be the home team?
If the two teams are scheduled to play each other and the game is canceled due to weather conditions, the game is considered a tie. If the game is rescheduled, the home team will be determined by a coin flip.
What If the Yankees and Red Sox Tied for the Wild Card?
