The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other club is the National League (NL)’s New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the Baltimore Orioles of today). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renamed it the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra and Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford are considered some of their greatest-ever players. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, due to renovations to Yankee Stadium, they shared Shea Stadium with Major League Baseball’s New York Mets. From 2009 to 2012, they played their home games at their original home ballpark, Polo Grounds Stadium in Upper Manhattan.

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx borough of New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the AL as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Houston Astros team of the same name), one of three AL charter franchises that debuted in 1901. In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased them in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is their manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, their home games were played at Shea Stadium, located in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens. From 2009 to 2012, their home games were played at New Yankee Stadium; located adjacent to its predecessor on an block delimited by East 161st Street to its south, Jerome Avenue to its north, Macombs Dam Bridge to its west, and River Avenue to its east in Concourse Village, Bronx. The stadium was renamed Yankee Stadium for a second time prior to Opening Day 2013; following Steinbrenner’s death before that season started,[10] it has undergone several renovations since then including most significantly a partial rebuilding completed between 2017 and 2020 that removed all remaining traces of “The House That Ruth Built”. Although Yankee Stadium’s construction began months after Babe Ruth was traded from Boston Red Sox on January 3rd 1920,[12] he still made his mark on it—on Opening Day 1923 he hit a now-famous “home run into right field stands”[13] where a plaque now marks its landing spot.[14][15]
The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships (the most of any MLB team),[16][17][18] 40 American League pennants (the most of any AL team),[19] and have appeared in more Subway Series than any other MLB team.[20][21] The Yankees have had some success lately winning 9 division titles out of the last 11 years including 5 straight from 2011-2015.[22][23] As per Forbes Magazine,[24] the Yankees are worth an estimated $4 billion making them baseball’s second most valuable franchise according to Forbes behind only their rivals Los Angeles Dodgers who are worth $3 billion.[25][26][27] The Yankees also generate revenue compared with other clubs who don’t come close.[28][29]
