The Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball
The New York Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball for the 2021 season, according to data from Cot’s Baseball Contracts. The Yankees’ payroll is $241 million, which is more than double the Major League Baseball average of $120 million.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have the second-highest payroll at $196 million, followed by the San Francisco Giants at $177 million. The Boston Red Sox are fourth at $173 million, and the Chicago Cubs round out the top five at $172 million.
The Washington Nationals have the lowest payroll in baseball at $61 million, followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates at $70 million and the Miami Marlins at $74 million.
The Yankees have the largest amount of money committed to player salaries
The Yankees currently have the largest amount of money committed to player salaries for the 2021 season. Their payroll is currently at $210 million, which is more than double the MLB average of $104 million. The Yankees’ payroll is also significantly higher than any other team’s, with the second-highest payroll belonging to the Los Angeles Dodgers at $184 million.
The Yankees’ high payroll is due in large part to their many star players, such as Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge. These players are all among the highest-paid in baseball, with Cole alone earning $36 million in 2021. The high salaries of these star players contribute a great deal to the Yankees’ large committed payroll.
Despite their high payroll, the Yankees are not guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. In fact, they missed the playoffs entirely in 2020, which was only the second time that has happened since 1995. The Yankees will need to hope that their star-studded roster can live up to its billing and help lead them back to the playoffs in 2021.

The Yankees’ luxury tax bill is more than double that of the next highest team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are projected to owe $31 million in luxury taxes for 2021. The Boston Red Sox are a close third at $30 million.
While the Yankees’ payroll is certainly high, it should be noted that much of that money is going to players who are no longer with the team. Of the $243 million in luxury tax commitments, $107 million is for players who are no longer on the roster, including former stars such as Alex Rodriguez and CC Sabathia.
