The Yankees are currently in the American League. This is their league since they are based in America. The American League has 14 teams while the National League has 16 teams. The American League uses a designated hitter while the National League does not.
The American League East
The American League East is one of six divisions in Major League Baseball. The AL East consists of teams located in the easternmost part of the United States and Canada. The divisional winner of the AL East automatically qualifies for the playoffs. The AL East is home to some of the most successful teams in baseball history, including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Toronto Blue Jays.
The American League Central
The American League Central is one of six divisions in Major League Baseball (MLB). This division was created in 1994, when the former American League West split into two divisions: Central and Pacific. The American League Central is made up of five teams: the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians, the Detroit Tigers, the Kansas City Royals, and the Minnesota Twins.
Prior to 1994, the only teams in this division were the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians. In 1998, the Milwaukee Brewers moved from the American League East to the Central. The Minnesota Twins were added in 2000 as part of MLB’s realignment plan. As a result of this realignment, each league consisted of three divisions (East, Central, and West).

Due to growing concerns about baseball’s talent level becoming too unbalanced, then-Commissioner Bud Selig proposed a radical plan: Every team would reassign themselves to one of three new geographically based leagues. The Yankees were placed in the American League Central.
This created much more even competition among teams, as the best teams in each league would now play each other more often. It also meant that the Yankees would have to compete against some of the best teams in baseball on a regular basis.
The move has been largely successful, as the Yankees have won five World Series titles since 1998. They have also made the playoffs an astounding 17 times in that span.
