Introduction

The start of summer signals the beginning of many outdoor activities and sports. Although some sports can be played year-round, many are seasonal and only played during certain months. Here is a look at some popular summer sports and when they typically start.

One of the most popular summer sports is baseball. The Major League Baseball season typically begins in late March or early April and runs through September or October. Baseball is also a popular sport at the collegiate level, with the season running from February to June.

Another widely played sport in the summer is tennis. The professional tennis circuit, known as the ATP Tour, runs from January to November, with a break in July for the Wimbledon tournament. The Women’s Tennis Association Tour also takes a break in July for Wimbledon but otherwise runs from January to December. Tennis is also popular at the collegiate level, with the season running from early February to late May for both men and women.

Golf is another sport that can be played year-round, although most tournaments are held in the spring and summer months. The Professional Golfers’ Association of America Tour runs from January to November, while the European Tour runs from February to December. The women’s professional golf circuit, known as the LPGA Tour, also runs from January to December.

Summer is also a popular time for swimming and track and field competitions. The Olympic Games are held every four years in the summer, with the next edition scheduled for Tokyo in 2020. Many other swimming competitions are held throughout the year, including national championships at the collegiate level in both the United States and Europe. Track and field competitions are also held year-round, but many of the biggest events take place in the summer months.

Swimming

Swimming is a sport that typically starts in the summer. It is a popular activity for people of all ages and can be done in both pools and open water. Swimming is a great way to stay in shape and can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels.

Diving

Diving is a sport in which athletes (divers) perform acrobatic maneuvers while diving from a platform or springboard into a body of water. Divers compete for either distance or height of their dives, as well as for the degree of difficulty and perfection of their execution. The first recorded diving competition took place in Sweden in 1873. Diving was included in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

There are three primary divisions of diving: springboard, platform, and synchronized (with a partner). In all three cases, divers must execute a set number of predetermined dives from varying heights and positions. Springboard divers leaps from a flexible board that allows them to bounce up before they enter the water; platform divers jump from stationary platforms, usually 10 meters (about 33 feet) high; and synchronized divers work with a partner to perform identical dives simultaneously. Either one or two persons may compete in synchronized diving events.

Water Polo

Water polo is a team sport in which teams of seven players attempt to score goals by throwing a ball into the opposing team’s net. The game is played in a swimming pool and each team has six field players and one goalkeeper. The game is divided into four quarters, with each team trying to score as many goals as possible in each quarter.

Water polo is an Olympic sport and was first included in the 1900 Summer Olympics. It was then dropped from the 1904 Summer Olympics but returned to the 1908 Summer Olympics. Water polo has been included in every Summer Olympic Games since 1912.

Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball is a outdoor sport that is played on a sand court. The game first originated in Hawaii and was played by the Hawaiian people. The game then spread to California where it became a popular sport.

Surfing

Skateboarding

Skateboarding began in Southern California in the 1950s. Skateboards were originally made from wood, but soon switched to plastic and then to aluminum. Today, skateboards are made from a variety of materials, including wood, aluminum, plastic, and even carbon fiber.

BMX

Bicycle motocross or BMX racing is a competitive cycling sport which started in the late 1960s. It typically involves short, closed-circuit races on dirt tracks with jumps and obstacles. BMX racing bikes are designed for speed and durability, and have much smaller wheels than a typical mountain bike.

BMX racing first gained popularity in Southern California in the 1970s, and has since spread to other parts of the United States and to other countries around the world. The sport is now governed by the International BMX Federation (IBMXF), which holds an annual World Championships event.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain. Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross-country, trail riding, all-mountain, downhill, and freeride.

Mountain biking started in the 1970s in California on the Marin County side of Mt. Tamalpais. Riders would ride their motorcycles to the top of Mt. Tam and then ride their bikes down the fire roads. This soon became known as ” Mt. Tamalpais Downhill.” The first downhill race was held in 1976 on Repack Road in Fairfax, CA. A group of riders figured out that they could ride their brakes to heat them up and make them smoke; this soon became known as “brake surfing.” The winner of this race was Dave Pelton who went on to win the Repack race 7 more times.
