The New York Yankees are a baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of Larry Rothschild, who has served as the team’s pitching coach since 2011, and also owns a minority stake in Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire. The current majority owner is Hal Steinbrenner, son of George Steinbrenner, who owned the team from 1973 until his death in 2010. Since 2010, these ownership duties have been passed on to Hal’s younger brother, Hank Steinbrenner. Brian Cashman is their General Manager.

The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 until 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, their home games were played at Shea Stadium as part of MLB’s scheduling conflicts with construction of what was originally known as NewYankee Stadium in adjacent parks. From 2009 to 2012, their home games have been played at Citi Field while their new stadium was built adjacent to its previous home; this was also done from 1974-1975 while Shea Stadium was rebuilt following its destruction by fire later that year (though no games were actually played at Shea following that fire). Yankee Stadium opened at its current location across 161st Street from Citi Field on April 16th 2009 with a game against Tampa Bay Rays; Citi Field itself opened on April 13th 2009 with a game between St Louis Cardinals and Mets which also featured ” Jets- Giants” Suite Seats sections reminiscent of Candlestick Park which closed 3 days later.. The stadium features 56 luxury suites; each suite features 15-20 tickets along with “in-suite” catering and HD televisions.. There are 4 levels of suites: Luxury Suites Level 1(closest to field), Luxury Suites Level 2&3(behind home plate), Legends Suite(between dugouts). Other Key amenities for fans include: erganomic design for all seating areas including wider seats and more leg room than any other ballpark currently or previously used by an MLB Team.. 5 escalators & 8 elevators for easy access to upper levels.. improved acoustics for better sound & more privacy.. ribbon message boards.. state-of-the art scoreboards & video displays..
