Origins
The Red Sox–Yankees rivalry is a Major League Baseball (MLB) rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The two teams have competed in MLB’s American League (AL) for over 100 years and have since developed one of the fiercest rivalries in American sports.
The roots of the rivalry are traced back to the early 1900s when Sox owner Henry Frazee sold star player Babe Ruth to the Yankees after a string of bad seasons. This move sparked the so-called “Curse of the Bambino” which would supposedly haunt the Sox for 86 years until they finally won another World Series in 2004.
Over the years, there have been many memorable moments between these two teams including playoff battles, close calls, and miraculous comebacks. The most recent chapter in this storied rivalry was written in 2018 when the two teams met in the AL Division Series with a trip to the World Series on the line. The Bombers would ultimately prevail in a hard-fought series, but not before some late-game fireworks that further added to this already heated matchup.

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. The Yankees compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other club is the National League (NL)’s New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased controlling interest in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team’s field manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, Interleague play resulted in Baltimore Orioles visitors replacing Detroit Tigers visitors during two series in each season. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark also named Yankee Stadium. With a seating capacity of 52,325 people, Yankee Stadium is also one of three active Major League Baseball stadiums with more than 50,000 seats; it is also one of only four MLB stadiums that host more than 40 million spectators per year; along with AT&T Park (San Francisco Giants), Busch Stadium (St Louis Cardinals) and Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs), [10] all have capacities over 40 million people per annum – Safeco Field just misses out at 39 million – and only these four have surpassed 50 million visitors.[11]
The Yankees are incessantly referred to as “the Bronx Bombers”,[12][13][14] “the Pinstripe Boys”,[15] or simply “the Bronx Zoo”.[16][17] The team’s primary rivals include their geographic crosstown rivals-the Mets; as well as their historical rivals-the Boston Red Sox,[18] whom they compete against for divisional championships,and supremacy in baseball overall-and whose rivalry with them is considered one of sports most well known rivalries.[19][20][21][22]
