The Rivalry

The Red Sox and Yankees have been bitter rivals since the early 1900s. The two teams have faced each other 2,425 times in the regular season, with the Yankees holding a 1,271-1,154 lead. The rivalry was sparked by the American League’s decision to move the Boston franchise to New York in 1903.

A Brief History

The Red Sox and the Yankees. The two most iconic franchises in all of American baseball, and perhaps in all of American sports. The two teams have been battling it out on the diamond for over a century now, and the rivalry between them is as strong as ever.

The two teams first met on the field in 1901, when the Boston Red Sox were known as the Boston Americans and the New York Yankees were known as the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders won that first matchup 6-2, but the Americans would get revenge later that year, winning the next matchup 7-3.

Throughout the early years of the rivalry, both teams had their share of success. The Yankees won their first World Series in 1923, while the Red Sox wouldn’t win their first until 1918. That 1916 victory was short-lived, however, as the Yankees won three straight World Series titles from 1936 to 1939. The tide began to turn in the 1940s though, as the Red Sox won four World Series titles in a span of seven years from 1941 to 1947.

Since then, both teams have had their ups and downs, but there’s no denying that when these two teams meet on the field, it’s always must-see TV. So set your DVRs and clear your schedule, because when these two teams square off, you don’t want to miss a single pitch.

The Rivalry Today

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are two of the most iconic and well-known teams in all of baseball. The two teams have been rivals for over a century, and the rivalry is still going strong today. The two teams have met 2,213 times since 1903, with the Yankees winning 1,271 of those games and the Red Sox winning 942. The two teams have met 11 times in the World Series, with the Yankees winning 8 of those series.

Pitching Matchups

The Red Sox will send out Chris Sale to the mound while the Yankees will have Luis Severino starting the game.

Masahiro Tanaka vs. Chris Sale

The Yankees will send right-hander Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to face Red Sox lefty Chris Sale in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, with radio coverage on WEEI 93.7 FM in Boston and WFAN 660/101.9 FM in New York.

Tanaka (4-2, 3.22 ERA) is coming off a no-decision against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings. The 29-year-old has pitched well since returning from the disabled list last month, recording a 2.92 ERA in five starts.

Sale (5-4, 2.23 ERA) is also coming off a no-decision, as he gave up one run on four hits and four walks while striking out 10 over six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays last time out. The 30-year-old has been excellent this season, but has been plagued by a lack of run support from his teammates, as he’s received just 2.78 runs per game of support from the Red Sox offense.

Luis Severino vs. David Price

The Red Sox will need to find a way to solve Luis Severino if they want to have a chance in this series. The Yankees’ ace is coming off a dominant season in which he went 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 230 strikeouts in 191.1 innings pitched. He was even better in the second half of the season, posting a 2.74 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while striking out 129 batters in only 98 innings pitched. In his three starts against the Red Sox this season, he was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 0.90 WHIP while striking out 18 batters in 19.2 innings pitched.

David Price will get the start for the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS. Price had a down year by his standards, going 16-7 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 177 strikeouts in 176 innings pitched. However, he did pitch better as the season progressed, posting a 3.11 ERA and 1.05 WHIP after the All-Star break. He also had some success against the Yankees this season, going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 1.13 WHIP while striking out 20 batters in 20 innings pitched over three starts.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
