The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC that is controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team’s field manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 until 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, home games were played at Shea Stadium, located in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens. From 2009 to 2012, home games were played at New Yankee Stadium in The Bronx; home games are currently being played there since it reopened for baseball activities during that season following a year-long renovation project that began after its closing for over a year following its final game of 2008 to allow conversion from its original configuration as a multi-purpose stadium for both baseball and football activities into that of a pure baseball facility followed by demolition of its remaining upper deck seating areas not used for baseball activities to allow construction of more outfield seating areas bringing it closer to that of its previous configuration prior to 1974 when Shea Stadium replaced it as home ballpark for both Major League teams playing their home games within city limits following that stadium’s completion which resulted both teams moving there for two seasons each while their new ballparks were being built; Yankee Stadium reopened on April 16th with an exhibition game against crosstown rivals New York Mets with regular season play beginning four days later on April 20th against longtime AL East rivals Boston Red Sox which resulted in a victory for them followed by them losing their first game played at their new ballpark against Cleveland Indians later that same day; following demolition of Shea Stadium completed shortly before end of 2008 MLB season, Citi Field opened during 2009 MLB season on April 13th with an exhibition game between Mets and Yankees becoming first regular season game played there taking place four days later on April 17th against San Francisco Giants.).
