The team’s home games were played at Union Grounds from 1884 until 1890, and at Polo Grounds II from 1890 until 1911. Between 1911 and 1922 they played at Polo Grounds I; they began playing at Yankee Stadium I—now known as Old Yankee Stadium—in 1923 following its purchase by Jacob Ruppert for $1.5 million ($24 million today). The stadium was rebuilt as part of a then-$2.4 billion stadium project which was completed after their 2009 season and resulted in a new Yankee Stadium—also known as “New Yankee Stadium” or “The House That Ruth Built”—that opened across street from Old Yankee Stadium on April 16, 2009.[16] The new ballpark was constructed with approximately 50% less steel than its immediate predecessor due primarily to advances in construction techniques such that it cost around $1 billion less than Old Yankee Stadium to construct despite having 2 decks rather than 1.[17][18] It includes amenities such as more luxury suites and serving better food than what was previously available at ballparks.[19] Although tax-exempt like most other MLB stadiums since 1986,[20] because it was constructed using more than $1 billion of private funds on land leased from New York City for $130 million per year through 2075,[21] bonds issued for its construction are subject to federal taxes.[22][23][24] Additionally, although originally set up so that debt service on these bonds would be partially paid by revenues generated by non-baseball events held at Yankees Stadium,[25][26] after Albany lawmakers modified state law in 2009 so that sales tax revenue generated by MLB events held at stadiums constructed with $350 million or more public subsidies could instead be used “to pay debt associated with those facilities”, this changed so that revenues generated by all events held at Yankees Stadium are now used to pay down these bonds.[27][28][29] In total, taxpayers have subsidized “$2.8 billion for three new stadiums”.[30][31]
In June 2020, During his rally speech in Tulsa Oklahoma President Donald Trump mentioned that some members of the Yankees had taken hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure against COVID-19 despite mixed reviews about its efficacy and doctors warning about potential side effects such as heart arrhythmias.[32][33][34] On June 15th it was reported that 12 members of the coaching staff had tested positive for COVID-19.[35] The first member of the team to test positive was CC Sabathia on May 10th who revealed his diagnosis publicly on May 14th after he had initially been reticent about doing so out of privacy concerns and also because he did not want to set a bad example given his history with substance abuse issues.[36][37][38]
