The Rivalry

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees are two of the most successful teams in Major League Baseball history. They have combined to win 33 World Series championships and 45 pennants. The two teams have played each other in the World Series 11 times, with the Yankees winning eight of those meetings.

The teams’ histories

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees are two of the most successful teams in baseball history. The Dodgers have won the World Series six times, while the Yankees have won it 27 times. The two teams have met 11 times in the World Series, with the Yankees winning eight of those meetings.

The most recent meeting between the two teams was in 1981, when the Dodgers won their sixth World Series title. The two teams have not met in the World Series since then. In fact, they have not even met in the playoffs since then.

However, that could all change this year. The Yankees and the Dodgers are both off to hot starts and are currently leading their respective divisions. If they both make it to the World Series, it would be a matchup for the ages.

The fans’ perspectives

The storied history between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees is well-documented. The two teams have met 11 times in the World Series, with the Yankees winning eight of those meetings. The most recent meeting was in 1981, when the Dodgers won their most recent World Series title.

However, the rivalry between the two teams extends beyond just the field of play. The fans of both teams have a fierce rivalry as well, with each side claiming to be the better team. This rivalry is on full display whenever the two teams meet, as fans from both sides will go out of their way to support their team.

This intense rivalry is one of the reasons why the Dodgers and Yankees are considered to be two of the most successful franchises in baseball history. Both teams have a rich history of winning, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. True baseball fans always enjoy watching these two great teams go head-to-head, regardless of who comes out on top.

The Last Time They Met

As of October 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees have not met in the World Series since 1981. The Yankees are currently in the AL East while the Dodgers are in the NL West, so they would only meet in the World Series if they were both to make it to the Fall Classic.

The last time the Dodgers and Yankees played in the World Series

It was 1988, and the Los Angeles Dodgers had just won the World Series. It was the first time in nine years that they had been to the Fall Classic, and the first time since 1981 that they had won it all. They were led by their young phenom, Kirk Gibson, who hit a walk-off home run in Game 1 that has become one of the most iconic moments in baseball history. The Yankees, on the other hand, were a dynasty in the making. They would go on to win the next four World Series, cementing their place as one of the greatest teams of all time.

The two teams met again in the World Series in 2017, with the Dodgers winning in seven games.

What has happened since then

It has been seven years since the last time the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees met in the World Series. The Dodgers won that year, and since then, a lot has happened for both teams. For the Dodgers, they have made it to the playoffs five times but have not made it back to the World Series. The Yankees have made it to the playoffs eight times and have won the World Series twice.

How It Could Happen Again

The last time the Dodgers and Yankees played in the World Series was in 1981. The Dodgers won in six games. It was a classic Fall Classic, pitting two of baseball’s most storied franchises against each other. The Dodgers haven’t been back to the World Series since then, but with a strong core of young players, they could be poised to make a run at it again in the near future.

If the Dodgers and Yankees meet in the World Series again

It’s been over three decades since the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees played each other in the World Series. The last time was 1988, when the Dodgers won in six games.

But with both teams now in first place in their respective divisions, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could meet again this October.

So how did we get here? How is it possible that two of baseball’s most storied franchises, who have played each other 22 times in the Fall Classic, could go 32 years without facing off?

First, a little history. The Yankees and Dodgers have been two of baseball’s most successful teams over the last century-plus. The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, more than any other team in baseball history. The Dodgers have won six titles since moving to Los Angeles in 1958, tied for fifth-most during that span.

The teams have played each other in some memorable World Series over the years. In 1941, the Yankees won their fifth title in six years, led by Joe DiMaggio’s .357 batting average and three home runs. In 1947, Jackie Robinson made his debut as the first African-American player in Major League Baseball, helping lead the Dodgers to a seven-game victory over New York.

The teams met again in 1949, with Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto leading New York to a four-game sweep. The following year, Robinson and fellow Brooklyn Dodger Roy Campanella powered their team to a five-game win over the Yankees. In 1953, Berra and Rizzuto led the Yankees to another sweep of Brooklyn.

The two teams didn’t meet again in the World Series until 1963, when Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale led Los Angeles to a six-game victory over New York. Koufax pitched three complete games, including a shutout in Game 7. The Yankees wouldn’t win another title until 1977.

Brooklyn finally got revenge against New York in 1955, behind Johnny Podres’ Game 7 shutout performance. It would be the only time the Dodgers would beat the Yankees in a World Series match-up (the teams would meet twice more before Brooklyn left for Los Angeles).

In 1981, both teams were division rivals for the first time since they were both part of baseball’s American League East division prior to 1955 (the Yankees moved to the AL East when MLB expanded that year). They met again that October in one of baseball’s most classic Fall Classics ever played. The series went back and forth; after five games it was tied 2-2 before Yankee catcher Thurman Munson hit a game-winning home run off Dodger reliever Steve Howe in game 6. But L.A., led by eventual MVP Fernando Valenzuela on the mound, came back to win Game 7 by a score of 5-4 on an RBI single from Joe Morgan in extra innings at Yankee Stadium

What would have to happen for that to happen

There is no guarantee that the Dodgers and Yankees will face each other in the World Series anytime soon. It would take a lot of things falling into place for that to happen.

First, the two teams would have to make it to the playoffs. That’s no guarantee, especially in a shortened season like 2020. Then, they would have to win their respective division or wild-card spot.

Once in the playoffs, they would need to advance through the rounds until they meet in the Fall Classic. The Yankees and Dodgers could theoretically play each other in an earlier round, but it’s more likely that they would meet in the World Series if both teams are playing their best baseball.

So, a lot would have to go right for the Dodgers and Yankees to play each other in the World Series again. But it’s not impossible, and fans of both teams can hope that it happens sooner rather than later.
