History of the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two Major League clubs based in New York City; the other is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play as an expansion team in 1901, and won their first AL title in 1921. In 1936, the team was purchased by Colonel Jacob Ruppert for $1.25 million ($26 million today) from Chicago sportsman Bill Veeck and underwent a major overhaul. The team then dominated baseball with players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle and others who became known as the “Core Four”. Over time they acquired other stars such as Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson and Alex Rodriguez who led them to victory in numerous World Series championship games.
The Yankees have won 28 World Series championships since their inception (tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for second most all time behind the San Francisco Giants’ eight). In addition to their 40 American League pennants, they have also won four West Division titles and three Wild Card berths. The Yankees’ streak of winning seasons currently stands at an MLB record 18 consecutive seasons. With over 10,000 wins and a .569 winning percentage since their founding through 2019, they are by far the most successful MLB team over this span by both measures; only four other teams have even half as many wins and only four teams have a winning percentage above .500 over this span (all of whom have fewer than 8500 wins).
