Introduction
The Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees are two of the most iconic baseball franchises in history. The two teams have been rivals for over a century, and their rivalry is still going strong today. The two teams meet each other regularly during the regular season, and they often meet in the playoffs as well.
The Rivalry
The long-standing rivalry between the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees is one of the most heated in baseball. The two teams have been division rivals since 1969, when the Twins were in the American League West and the Yankees were in the American League East. The rivalry intensified in 1976 when the Yankees won their first World Series in 18 years, while the Twins lost their first Series appearance ever. In 1987, after 14 seasons of heartbreak, the Twins finally won their first World Series title by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals. In doing so, they denied the Cardinals a chance to win a Series at Yankee Stadium. The very next year, the Twins vacated their home of 28 years, Metropolitan Stadium, for a new ballpark. The following season, they met the Yankees in the ALCS, with Minnesota winning en route to their second consecutive World Series victory. In 2001 however, tragedy struck when Twins pitcher Denny Neagle was injured in a game against New York at Yankee Stadium. This led to Minnesota having to start pitcher Kyle Lohse in Game 7 of that year’s World Series against Arizona; Lohse would go on to lose that game 3-2 and give up a walk-off home run to Mark Grace. As a result of this 9/11-delayed series loss, among other contributing factors such as owner Carl Pohlad’s penny-pinching ways and general managerial failings, longtime manager Tom Kelly was forced to step down following that season.
