The Rivalry
Why the Rivalry Exists
The Yankees and White Sox have been divisional rivals for years, meaning that they often compete for the same playoff spot. Additionally, the two teams have a long history of bad blood, dating back to the early 1900s. In recent years, the rivalry has been further stoked by a series of on-field altercations.
The Games
The New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox are two of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball. The rivalry between these two teams dates back to the early days of the sport, and the two teams have been playing each other since 1901.
The Yankees and the White Sox have met in the playoffs four times, with the Yankees winning three of those series. The most recent playoff meeting between these two teams was in 2005, when the White Sox won the American League Championship Series in four games.
The most recent regular season series between these two teams was played in 2019, with the Yankees winning three out of four games. The next scheduled series between these two teams is set for 2020.
The Future
The Yankees play the White Sox at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, August 8 at 7:05pm.
How the Rivalry Might Change
It’s no secret that the Yankees-White Sox rivalry is one of the fiercest in baseball. But with both teams in rebuilding mode, the next few years could see a changing of the guard in the AL East.
The Yankees have been dominant recently, winning four division titles in a row and making it to the ALCS in each of those seasons. But with an aging core of players and a farm system that is not as deep as it once was, they are due for a rebuild at some point in the near future.
Meanwhile, the White Sox are in the midst of a rebuild that has seen them unload many of their top players over the past few seasons. They are unlikely to be contenders anytime soon, but they could be a force to reckon with once their young core of players develops.
So while the Yankees-White Sox rivalry may not be as intense as it once was, it could be poised for a resurgence in the coming years.
