George retires from baseball
Since his poor batting performance in the 1955 World Series, George’s spot on the Yankees lineup has been in jeopardy. By the end of the 1957 season, George’s batting average had dropped to .301, which was lower than it had been in any season since 1949. In December 1957, the Yankees announced that they would not renew George’s contract for the 1958 season. At the age of 37, George was forced to retire from baseball.
