History of Yankees Spring Training
The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two Major League clubs based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National League. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner, who owns 20% of Yankee Global Enterprises, and by Gotham Baseball Ventures LLC and Preston Renehan’s Centerplate Inc., which own 60% and 20%, respectively. George Steinbrenner, patriarch of the Steinbrenner family and long-time owner of the Yankees, died in July 2010 after launching major changes to Yankee Stadium and spending lavishly on free agents.;[4][5] his funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on August 3.[6]
In baseball, spring training is a series of practices and exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season. Spring training allows new players to try out for roster and position spots, and gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. Spring training has always attracted fan attention, drawing crowds who travel to see their favorite teams play exhibitions against other high-profile opponents. Atlanta Braves fans travel to Orlando to see their team play matches against defending World Series champions;[7] Dodger fans travel all over Arizona to catch a glimpse of their favorite players;[8] Cardinals fans head down to Jupiter;[9] while Twins fans make their way to Fort Myers.[10] From 1955 to 2016, teams played in Florida and Arizona during spring training;[11][12][13][14] this was caused by perennial warm weather conditions at those locations during February and March.[15][16] Since 2017, Florida has hosted all Grapefruit League teams except for those based in Western Pennsylvania – Pittsburgh Pirates ( Bradenton), Philadelphia Phillies (Clearwater) – who train at Complexe Sportif Roland Garros in Lecce instead.[17][18][19] Meanwhile all Cactus League teams continue to train in Arizona with no plans on leaving that state anytime soon.[20][21]
