The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973.Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is their manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, their home games were played at Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens. In 2009, they moved into newly constructed Yankee Stadium in The Bronx.

The Yankees are one of the most successful sports clubs worldwide; with 18 division titles, 40 AL pennants (second-most behind St. Louis Cardinals’ 46), 27 World Series championships (most all-time), and 13 MLB Most Valuable Player Awards (the most of any team). The franchise ranks first among all North American sports teams with nearly 40 million fans cumulatively since their establishment as one as well as being ranked 1st among Global Football Brands according to Forbes magazine in 2019 just ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona. As well as boasting a large global fan-base they also have strong rivalries especially with their fellow “AL LowerCase east” foes Boston Red Sox which is known as one of sport’s greatest rivalries while also having rivalry games with Los Angeles Angels & Seattle Mariners within their own division and also across cities with crosstown rivals such as Mets & Bronx Is Burning & Brooklyn Dodgers
