Origins
The New York Yankees were established in 1901. They began play in the American League’s second season and have been in the AL ever since. The Yankees have the most titles of any team in the four major North American professional sports leagues.
New York’s first professional baseball team
The New York Yankees were founded in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles. The team moved to New York in 1903 and became the New York Highlanders. The name was changed to the Yankees in 1913. The Yankee stadium opened in 1923.
The New York Knickerbockers
The New York Knickerbockers, baseball’s first organized team, were founded by Alexander J. Cartwright. In 1845, he and a group of young men from Manhattan’s Upper West Side decided to form a baseball club. They named themselves after the now-defunct Knickerbocker Fire Engine Company No. 12 of the New York Volunteer Fire Department.
The team played its first game on June 19, 1845, against the New York Baseball Club at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. In that game, which the Knickerbockers lost 22-1 (yes, you read that correctly), Cartwright served as captain and played second base.
While the Knickerbockers were not the first team to play baseball (games had been recorded as early as 1838), they were responsible for codifying many of the rules that are still in use today, such as three strikes per batter and nine players per side.
For his contributions to the game, Cartwright is often referred to as “the father of baseball.” TheKnickerbockers disbanded in 1858, but their legacy continues on through present-day Major League Baseball teams such as… you guessed it, the New York Yankees!

The New York Highlanders
The New York Highlanders were a professional baseball team that competed in Major League Baseball from 1903 to 1912. The Highlanders were formed as the result of the conflict between the National League and the American League. The American League had placed a team in New York City, which the National League saw as a threat to its territory. As a result, the National League decided to create its own team in New York City, which became known as the Highlanders.
The Highlanders were not particularly successful on the field, finishing in last place six times in their twelve years of existence. However, the team did have some star players, including Hall of Famers Roger Bresnahan, Rube Waddell, and Joe McGinnity.
In 1913, the Highlanders moved to become the New York Yankees, and they have been one of baseball’s most successful teams ever since.
The Bronx Bombers
In January 1903, the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the current franchise of the same name) sold their star player and manager, John McGraw, to the New York Giants for $500,000. This caused consternation among Orioles owner Harry Von der Horst and other members of the National League, who argued that it violated their gentlemen’s agreement not to sell players to one another for large sums of money. In response, Von der Horst got together with other American League owners and they decided to form a new team in New York City. They named it the New York Highlanders, after the hilly area of Manhattan where their new stadium was being built.
