The Yankees began play in the AL as the Baltimore Orioles ( no relation to the current Baltimore Orioles team), one of eight charter franchises when the league formed in 1901. They moved to New York City in 1903 and became known as the New York Highlanders before eventually being renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC that is controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra and outfielder Reggie Jackson are also members of the team’s Hall of Fame. The team’s rivalry with the Boston Red Sox is one of baseball’s most well-known rivalries.

The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, 40 American League (AL) pennants, and lead MLB in both victories and total attendance. In pursuit of winning their 28th World Series championship title, they finished first in their division for a record 17 consecutive seasons from 1998–2014, including winning five consecutive AL East titles from 2009 to 2013 and seven consecutive AL pennants from 2009 to 2017—the second-longest streak without a World Series appearance since divisional play began in 1969 (after going undefeated in three straightFall Classic appearances from 1976 to 1978). Thirty-seven Yankees players and eleven Yankee managers have been inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame; more than any other professional baseball franchise. Baseball writer Joel Sherman described Yankee Stadium as having been “the house that Ruth built”. Who’s Hot

The “Hot Stove League” is the period between the end of the World Series and Spring Training when Major League Baseball (MLB) teams make trades and sign free agent players. So, while we don’t know exactly when the Yankees will play again, we do know that they’ll be busy this offseason!

Some of the Yankees’ key players this season were relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman, starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, and first baseman Luke Voit. All three of these players are set to become free agents this offseason, so it will be interesting to see if the Yankees can keep them on the team.

Other players who had a great season for the Yankees include shortstop Didi Gregorius, outfielder Aaron Judge, and catcher Gary Sanchez. All three of these players are under contract for next season, so the Yankees will have a strong core group of players to build around for 2020.

Who’s Not

The Yankees have a lot of firepower on their disabled list. Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is out with a hamstring injury, first baseman Greg Bird is sidelined with a foot injury, third baseman Miguel Andujar is dealing with a strained shoulder and pitcher Dellin Betances has a strained Achilles tendon.
