In an effort to grow the game of baseball internationally, Major League Baseball (MLB) has been playing regular season games in London since 2019. The first two years saw the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees as the participating teams, but in 2021 the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs will take their turn.

This year’s games will be played at London Stadium, which is currently home to the Premier League’s West Ham United Football Club. The stadium has a capacity of over 60,000 and will be configured specifically for baseball. This is different from past years, when the games were played at smaller stadiums that had to be converted for baseball.

The London Series is scheduled for June 13-14, 2021, with both games set to start at 1:10 p.m. local time (8:10 a.m. ET).

The Yankees’ Roster

The Yankees are a professional baseball team based in New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National League. In the 1901 season, the club began play in the AL as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise that had ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming it the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of managing partner Hal Steinbrenner, who owns a majority stake, and by limited partners Jeffrey Lurie, and brothers David Einhorn and Larry Rosenthal. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and former catcher Joe Girardi serves as manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, home games were staged at Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens while Yankee Stadium was renovated. From 2009 to 2012, home games were held at newly constructed Yankee Stadium in The Bronx; in 2013, they returned toYankee Stadium.

The New York Yankees are playing in London on June 29 and 30, 2019. The games will be played at the iconic London Stadium, which is also the home of the 2012 Olympic Games. This will be the first time that an MLB team has played regular season games in Europe.
