Designed by Populous (formerly HOK Sport), it is named after Citigroup, a New York financial services company which purchased the naming rights. The $850 million project was funded entirely with private financing.

Shea Stadium was a baseball stadium located in New York City. It was the home field of the New York Mets from 1964 to 2008. Shea Stadium was named in honor of William A. Shea, the man who brought National League baseball back to New York after the Dodgers and Giants left for California.
Shea Stadium was originally built as a multi-purpose facility, and it also served as the home of the New York Jets football team from 1964 to 1983. In its later years, it was used mostly for baseball, and it became one of the most iconic ballparks in Major League Baseball history.
The last game at Shea Stadium was played on September 28, 2008, and it was demolished soon afterwards to make way for Citi Field, the Mets’ current home ballpark.

The Highlanders were officially renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.
