In February 1993, the Tampa City Council voted 8–1 to build a new ballpark on the site of Al Lopez Field in order to keep the Yankees in Tampa for spring training. The team wanted a stadium with 6,000–7,000 seats that would cost no more than $18 million to build; however, because construction costs had risen since the initial estimate, Legends Field ultimately cost $30 million. Groundbreaking took place on November 8, 1994, and Legends Field was dedicated on March 30, 1996. In February 2007, it was announced that Legends Field would be renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field in honor of then-owner George Steinbrenner (who died on July 13, 2010).

Ten years later, the stadium underwent a $32 million renovation that added luxury suites and club seats.
