Introduction
On April 18, 1921, the Yankees played their first game at the Polo Grounds against the Boston Red Sox. The game was a home game for the Yankees, but it was also the first game ever played at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees won the game, 7-6, in front of a crowd of 40,000 fans.
The Polo Grounds was originally built in 1883 as a polo field for the New York Metropolitans, who were then a National League baseball team. When the Mets moved to Queens in 1962, the Polo Grounds became the home of the New York Giants, who were then in the same league as the Mets. In 1964, when both teams moved to different leagues (the Giants to San Francisco and the Mets to Shea Stadium), the Polo Grounds was abandoned and demolished soon afterwards.
The Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds was the name of three stadiums in Upper Manhattan, New York City, used mainly for professional baseball and American football from 1880 until 1963. The original Polo Grounds, opened in 1876 and located at East 155th Street and Irving Place in Harlem, was the third ballpark built on the site of one of the earliest baseball fields in upper Manhattan going back to at least 1823. The second Polo Grounds was built across the street from the original between 1886 and 1888; it was located on Eighth Avenue between 155th and 156th Streets.
Ebbets Field
Ebbets Field was a Major League Baseball stadium in Brooklyn, New York. It is known primarily as the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team of the National League, from 1913 to 1957.
The Bronx
The Bronx is the northernmost borough of New York City, within the U.S. state of New York. It is south of Westchester County; northeast and east of Manhattan, across the Harlem River; and north of Queens, across the East River. Since 1914, the borough has had the same boundaries as Bronx County, the third-most densely populated county in the United States.
