The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Several league baseball clubs were established within some twenty blocks of Fourteenth Street and Union Square soon after 1863 when recreational baseball became widely popular following publication of baseball pioneer Alexander Joy Cartwright’s rules for so-called base ball games which were first printed that year. In 1876, eighteen incorporation papers for organizations called themselves as “New York Base Ball Clubs” were filed at One Police Plaza which was then serving as New York City’s Municipal Building.[1] That year saw establishment of both National League Major League Baseball franchises within city limits when most powerful business magnates such as John T. Brush bought established teams known variously as Brooklyn Atlantics, Brooklyn Grays or Brooklyn Grooms which then became known respectively as Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates; while nine businessmen including Ferdinand Abell, Leonard Ainslie Butler Coote Dexter Jr., William Hulbert and Albert Spalding bought existing teams variously known as Hartford Dark Blues or Chicago White Stockings which then became respectively know as Hartford Senators later St Louis Browns and Chicago Cubs.[2][3][4][5]
