Roster

The White Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division, where they are the defending World Series champions. The team is owned by Jerry Reinsdorf, and plays its home games at Guaranteed Rate Field on the city’s South Side. They are one of two major league clubs in Chicago; the other is the Chicago Cubs of the National League (NL) Central division.

The team in its present form was founded in 1900 as a minor league franchise and made its MLB debut in 1901. In order to replace retiring stars such as Shoeless Joe Jackson and Charles Comiskey, as well as to address fans’ wishes to see more homegrown talent, manager Jimmy Calloway led a successful rebuild of the team starting in 1918 that was dubbed by fan magazine Tip Topshots as “The Greatest Minor League Team Ever Assembled”. The resulting roster included future Hall of Famers Sleepy Floyd Gaines, Red Faber, Eddie Cicotte, and Oscar Felsch, as well as future members of baseball’s most exclusive club, 3,000-hit members Luke Appling and Harold Baines. The team finished with a record of 94–60 (.610), enough for second place behind the first-place Cleveland Indians but still 20 games ahead of third-place Detroit Tigers. Jackson hit .354 for the season while Thomas Bard went 16–2 (1.86 ERA). Cicotte won 29 games while losing only 7 but did not make his start in Game One due to cold weather that day despite owner Comiskey’s fervent pleas; he instead started Game Three which would be his last game before being banned for life due to his involvement in the Black Sox Scandal. Left fielder happy Felsch hit .298 with 19 home runs while Faber won 25 games with an ERA just under 2.00. gaining almost exclusive use of right field due to his strong throwing arm which often prevented opposing base runners from attempting to take extra bases on hits to right field; he would become known years later among White Sox fans for making “The Catch” off Babe Ruth that preserved pitcher Carl Mays’ 3–0 perfect game victory against the New York Yankees on May 1, 1923 at Yankee Stadium during Babe Ruth’s first season with New York
