The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as no more than an expansion team called the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the current Baltimore Orioles team). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC that is controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra was signed as a free agent by Steinbrenner still as part-owner of Rockies and served as their first spring training camp instructor/manager.[8] Unlike many baseball teams which hold spring training exhibition games at their regular-season ballparks, since 1930, the Yankees have hosted their spring training games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida; previously they trained at Phoenix Municipal Stadium from 1966 to 1987 and Fort Lauderdale Stadium from 1962 to 1965.[9][10] The stadium is nicknamed “The Boss” after Steinbrenner’s nickname.[11]
