The Steinbrenner family

Despite the fact that the New York Yankees are one of the most iconic and successful franchises in professional sports, there is still some mystery surrounding who exactly owns the team.

The Yankees have been owned by the Steinbrenner family since 1973, when George Steinbrenner bought the team for $10 million. The Steinbrenners have been majority owners of the Yankees ever since, with George’s son Hank taking over as principal owner after his father’s death in 2010.

The Steinbrenner family’s involvement with the Yankees actually dates back even further than 1973, however. In 1955, George Steinbrenner’s shipbuilding company entered into a partnership withDelaware North to build new stadiums for the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians (which Delaware North also owned). This partnership eventually led to Steinbrenner becoming a minority owner of the Yankees in 1967.

Now, nearly 50 years after first becoming involved with the team, the Steinbrenners show no signs of slowing down. Hank Steinbrenner has said that he plans to keep ownership of the Yankees within his family for “many generations” to come.

Hal Steinbrenner

Hal Steinbrenner is the principal owner and chairman of the New York Yankees. He is the son of former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Hal took over control of the team after his father’s death in 2010.

Prior to taking over the Yankees, Hal was a managing partner of Karna LLC, a private equity investment firm. He also worked for GoldKist Inc., an Atlanta-based poultry company, and for Drexel Burnham Lambert, an investment bank.

Hal has a bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan.

Hank Steinbrenner

Hank Steinbrenner was the head of Yankee Global Enterprises, and the principal owner of the New York Yankees. He was the son of George Steinbrenner and the older brother of Hal Steinbrenner. Hank Steinbrenner took over day-to-day control of the Yankees after his father’s death in 2010, but relinquished control to Hal in 2014. He passed away in 2020.

Other New York Yankees’ Owners

The New York Yankees are owned by a limited partnership, which is managed by a Board of Directors. The Board is led by the Managing General Partner, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Yankees. The current Managing General Partner and CEO is Hal Steinbrenner, who took over for his father George Steinbrenner in 2007.

David Cone

David Cone was a part-owner of the Yankees in 2000. Cone, along with several other retired Yankees players owned a minority stake in the team. George Steinbrenner was the majority owner of the Yankees at that time.

Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter became a partial owner of the Yankees in 2000. He increased his stake to 15% in 2004 and then to 18% in 2006. Although he retired from playing in 2014, Jeter continues to be a key figure with the organization as its chief executive officer.
