First Base Umpire
The first base umpire is responsible for making all calls at first base. This includes plays where the ball is batted, as well as plays involving the runner on first base. Rotation
MLB uses a rotating system to assign umpires to games. The process is as follows:
-The Head of Umpiring creates a master list of all umpires, ranked from 1-18
-The Head of Umpiring creates a rotation schedule for the next three weeks, based on the master list
-The game assignments are then sent out to the umpires two weeks in advance.
For example, if today is May 1st, the Head of Umpiring would create a rotation schedule for the games taking place from May 15th-31st. This schedule would be sent out to the umpires on May 1st, and they would know which games they are assigned to two weeks in advance.
