They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets.

History

The New York Yankees are a Major League Baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in the American League East division. One of the American League’s eight charter franchise teams, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and moved to New York City after spending one season as the Milwaukee Brewers (a predecessor of today’s Milwaukee Brewers). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery bought the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders.

The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the Baltimore Orioles who play today). Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise that had ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by salt mining magnate Hal Steinbrenner, who has served as principal owner since his father George’s death in 2010. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and former catcher Aaron Boone is their manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 until 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, they shared Shea Stadium with Major League Baseball’s(MLB) other New York City-based teams,the Mets and Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers respectively. From 2009 to 2012, they played their home games at Citi Field, also located in Queens. One of baseball’s most successful franchises,[17][18][19] since 1936 they have won 10 AL Pennantsand 27 World Series championships—more than any other MLB team—with 40 American League titles overall

The Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are an American professional baseball team based in Baltimore, Maryland. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. As one of the American League’s eight charter teams in 1901, this particular franchise spent its first year as a major league club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Milwaukee Brewers before moving to St. Louis, Missouri, to become the St. Louis Browns in 1902. After 52 years in St. Louis, the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1954 and adopted the historic Orioles name in honor of Maryland’s state bird, which is also the official bird of Baltimore. The Orioles name had also been used by several previous major and minor league baseball clubs in Baltimore, including another AL charter member franchise also named the Baltimore Orioles that competed in the Union Association during 1884.

The Orioles have won nine World Series championships and seven AL pennants since their inception. They are also well known for their influential ballpark, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which opened in 1992 in downtown Baltimore.

The Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 14. Their most recent appearance and win was in 2018. The Red Sox’s minor league system consists of seven Minor League Baseball affiliates across the United States and in Puerto Rico.

The Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are a professional baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Rays compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. Since its inception, the team’s home venue has been Tropicana Field.

The Rays began play as an expansion team in the 1998 Major League Baseball season. The franchise won its first AL pennant in 2008, led by manager Joe Maddon and third baseman Evan Longoria. The team also appeared in the World Series for the first time that year, losing to the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2018, the Rays advanced to their second World Series appearance, again losing to the Houston Astros.
