Who Did the Yankees Draft in 2020?

2020 Draft Picks

The 2020 MLB Draft was held on June 10-11 and the Yankees selected 22 players. With their first pick, they selected third baseman Jordan Butler from the University of San Diego.

1st Round

With the 28th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees have selected third baseman Jordan Butler from the University of Florida.

Butler, 21, is a left-handed hitter and thrower who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds. He was ranked as the No. 33 prospect in the draft by Baseball America.

As a junior at Florida this season, Butler hit .305/.367/.476 with seven home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 57 games. He was named a Second Team All-SEC selection.

In his three-year collegiate career, Butler slashed .273/.341/.423 with 16 home runs and 101 RBIs in 168 games.

2nd Round

The Yankees drafted outfielder Jake Sanford from Western Kentucky University with the 30th pick in the second round of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft on Thursday.

Sanford, 21, was named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball this season after hitting .362/.457/.632 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 40 games for the Hilltoppers.

3rd Round

The Yankees selected right-handed pitcher Scott Blewett with the 62nd pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Blewett, 22, went 6-7 with a 3.90 ERA (33 ER/77.0 IP) and 90 strikeouts against 24 walks in 19 starts with Double-A Trenton this past season.

Analysis of 2020 Draft

The New York Yankees had a very successful 2020 draft, drafting players that will fill needs in the future. They Yankees went heavy on pitching, which was a need of theirs. They also drafted a few players that have the potential to be star players. Let’s take a closer look at the 2020 draft class.

1st Round

With the 27th pick in the 2020 MLB draft, the New York Yankees have selected RHP Josh Stowers from Louisville.

Stowers, 21, is a 6’3″, 185-pound right-hander from Greer, South Carolina. He was ranked as the 67th best prospect in the 2020 draft class by Baseball America.

As a junior at Louisville this season, Stowers posted a 3.63 ERA with 95 strikeouts and 37 walks in 79.1 innings of work. He was named a Second Team All-American by Baseball America.

Stowers is the third pitcher the Yankees have drafted in the first round since 2011, joining Gerrit Cole and James Kaprielian.

2nd Round

With their second-round pick, the Yankees selected shortshop Anthony Volpe out of Delbarton HS in New Jersey. Volpe was widely considered to be one of the best high school talents in the draft, and Baseball America even ranked him as the 27th best prospect in the entire draft class.

3rd Round

Round 3: Pick 102- OF/1B Hudson Haskin from Tulane
Hudson Haskin was ranked as the 134th best prospect in the 2020 draft class by Baseball America. He is 6’1” and 190 pounds, and he bats and throws right-handed. The Yankees drafted him out of high school in the 37th round of the 2017 draft, but he did not sign.

Haskin was named a Second Team All-American by Perfect Game after his junior year at Tulane. In 2019, he hit .353/.469/.602 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs, 17 stolen bases (in 19 attempts), and 49 walks (against 36 strikeouts) in 58 games. Hudson Haskin projects as a corner outfielder or first baseman in professional ball.
