How will this affect the Yankees?
On July 29th, 2018, the Yankees acquired Luke Voit from the Cardinals in a trade. The Yankees gave up Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos in return. How will this trade affect the Yankees? Let’s take a look.
They will have a new first baseman
The Yankees have agreed to acquire first baseman Luke Voit from the Cardinals in exchange for minor league pitcher Giovanny Gallegos and infielder Tyler Webb, the team announced on Thursday.
Voit, 27, was a pleasant surprise for the Cardinals last season, hitting .263/.377/.488 with 14 home runs in 96 games. He was especially strong down the stretch, batting .314/.411/.advantage in September. For his career, he’s a .262/.358/.425 hitter in parts of three seasons.
While Voit isn’t a superstar, he’s a solid hitter who should be an upgrade over Greg Bird at first base. The Yankees have been linked to Bryce Harper and Manny Machado this offseason, but it’s unlikely they’ll land either star. Acquiring Voit gives them a solid stopgap until one of those players becomes available.
They will have depth in the bullpen
The Yankees have long been known for their strong bullpen, and this move will only solidify that strength. With Voit now in the fold, the Yankees will have a very strong 1-2-3 punch at the end of games with Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton, and Voit.
They will have a left-handed bat off the bench
The Yankees have acquired first baseman Luke Voit from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos and minor league outfielder Randy Arozarena, the team announced on Saturday.
Voit, 27, hit .263/.358/.466 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs in 96 games for the Cardinals this season. He provides the Yankees with a left-handed bat off the bench and can play both first base and DH.
Gallegos, 26, was 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA and one save in 28 relief appearances for the Yankees this season. Arozarena, 22, hit .344/.433/.602 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs in 24 games for Double-A Trenton this season.
