Pitching Staff

The New York Yankees selected right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft.

RHP Gerrit Cole: A former No. 1 overall pick of the Pirates, Cole was acquired by the Yankees in a blockbuster trade this offseason. He is coming off a career year in which he went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and an MLB-leading 276 strikeouts in 212 innings pitched. He should slot in as the team’s No. 1 starter and anchor a formidable rotation that also includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and James Paxton.

RHP Luis Severino: Severino was having a Another dominant season before suffering a lat injury that sidelined him for most of 2019. He went 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA and 220 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched in 2018 and should return to form this season as the team’s No. 2 starter behind Cole.

RHP Masahiro Tanaka: Tanaka had another solid season in 2019, going 12-6 with a 3.61 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 156 innings pitched. He has been remarkably consistent since joining MLB back in 2014, compiling a 78-46 record with a 3.74 ERA over that span. He will once again be counted on to eat up innings and provide quality starts for the Yankees this season as their No. 3 starter behind Cole and Severino.

LHP James Paxton: Paxton was acquired by the Yankees at last year’s trade deadline from the Mariners and he flourished down the stretch, going 6-0 with a 1
