The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased controlling interest in both the Yankees and NBC from CBS in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra and longtime broadcaster Phil Rizzuto are listed among their legends; Berra managed them to 14 pennants and 10 World Series victories during his tenure as skipper from 1976 through 1983. Yankee Stadium, originally designed by Osborn Engineering and renovated multiple times since its 1909 opening, is home to 35 Bronze statuettes that comprise “Monument Park,” each honoring a significant past Yankee; Babe Ruth’s likeness is considered amongst baseball’s most famous statues. The team plays its home games at Yankee Stadium with AAA affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders playing select home games there as well during their season.

The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, 40 American League pennants (tied for first all time), and 19 East Division titles—more than any other MLB team—including a record 12 consecutive titles from 1998 through 2009; they also won three consecutive World Series championships from 1998 to 2000 , becoming only the second team in Major League Baseball history(and first MLB team ever)to accomplish such a feat . The 28 World Series titles is also second-most all time , behind only St . Louis Cardinals , who have won 11 more titles than Bronx Bombers . As of 2019 , they have made 50 appearances on Sunday Night Baseball ; this is more appearances than any other team on that show since it began airing on ESPN2 in 1990 , when they made their 25th appearance .
