Away

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx, in New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the present-day Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased controlling interest in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team’s field manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, repairs were made to Yankee Stadium, correcting some problems caused by nearly 50 years of continuous use by increasing standard-seat widths from 18 inches (460 mm) to 20 inches (510 mm). From 2009 to 2012, Yankee Stadium underwent a $1 billion renovation that created new concession stands and restaurants throughout ballpark while building a new stadium within its original footprint without feeling cramped on game day like many of today’s multipurpose stadiums do. The renovated stadium opened on April 2, 2009 and hosted a World Series game later that year while serving as host for regular season games through 2012 until moving into their current home ballpark Yankee Stadium II which opened on April 16th 2016 which once again gave rise to one of baseball’s most iconic stadiums.

The Yankees’ rivalry with Boston Red Sox is one of [the fiercest] rivals in all of professional sports.[10][11][12] As such there are very few meaningful statistics between these two teams because they rarely play each other outside of their annual matchups.[13]

Standings

Entering tonight’s game, the Yankees are in first place in the AL East with a record of 30-17. They are two games ahead of the Rays and four games ahead of the Red Sox. American League
