The Yankees’ history

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of twoMajor League clubs based in New York City; the other is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles franchise),moveing to New York in 1903 and adopting their current name eight years later.

One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, where they played their first game. Originally called the Baltimore Orioles, they moved to New York City and became known as the New York Highlanders before settling on their current name in 1913. The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by businessman George Steinbrenner III. Hal Steinbrenner serves as managing general partner and is Seattle Mariners owner and billionaire John Henry is a minor partner. Brian Cashman is their general manager, and Aaron Boone is their field manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, they shared Shea Stadium with Major League Baseball’s New York Mets; from 1976 to 2008, home games were played at newly constructed Yankee Stadium across 162nd Street from where Yankee Stadium had previously stood; it opened four months after Shea Stadium closed for renovation after hosting three Mets seasons there as well as two World Series (1973 – 1974) while being used full-time for both teams’ home games during those years—thus becoming one of two instances when three professional teams used one facility at various times simultaneously
