Early Life and Career
Derek Jeter was born in Pequannock, New Jersey, on June 26, 1974. He is the son of Dorothy (née Connors) and Sanderson Charles Jeter. His father, an African-American, played baseball as a teenager in the Negro Leagues; his mother is of Irish and German descent. They met while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. Derek has one sister, Sharlee, who is 18 months younger than him.
Jeter grew up a Yankees fan and throwback jerseys were his favorite item of clothing as a child. He idolized Yankees players such as Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson and Dave Winfield growing up. Jeter attended Kalamazoo Central High School in Michigan where he played varsity baseball, basketball and football. As a junior he was selected by USA Today as one of the country’s top high school baseball prospects and was namedKalamazoo Area Player of the Year by the Detroit Free Press. That year he also won Gatorade Player of the Year honors for Michigan.
In 1993, Jeter enrolled at Central Michigan University where he played college baseball for the Chippewas instead of going straight to professional baseball after high school graduation per his parents’ wishes
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other club is the National League (NL)’s New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles team), renaming themselves the New York Highlanders in 1913 and then taking on their current name in late 1922.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra and longtime broadcaster Phil Rizzuto are among their icons and former players who have been inducted into either the National Baseball Hall of Fame or Museum or both. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 until 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark also called Yankee Stadium.
In closing, we can see that the number 24 is a significant number for the New York Yankees. From Babe Ruth to Lou Gehrig to Don Mattingly, many great Yankees have worn the number 24 on their jersey. It is a number that is steeped in Yankee tradition and greatness.
