The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National League (NL).

The team’s history

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other is the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to Manhattan, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.

The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by relatives of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is the team’s field manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 until 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 2009, they moved into newly constructed Yankee Stadium in adjacent Bronx County.

The Highlanders finished second place in 1903 behind Baltimore and again in 1904, but because Baltimore had won two more games than New York both times, for purposes of standings placement regardless of winning percentage, these seasons were considered identical: New York had won 71 games both times while Baltimore had won 74 both times; conversely, when a given season ended with two teams having identical records but one having played more games than another—as was frequently the case before interleague play became common—the tiebreaker was always which team had played more games. The official reason for assigning 1901 and 1902 seasons to Baltimore was thus “to provide comparative standings data.”
