When the New York Yankees take the field in 2021, they will have a new captain. The Bombers announced on Friday that outfielder Aaron Judge will be taking over the leadership role from longtime captain and first baseman, Derek Jeter.
“It’s an honor to be named captain of the New York Yankees,” Judge said in a statement. “I want to thank ownership and the front office for trusting me with this responsibility and I look forward to representing this organization with dignity and class.”
Judge, 28, is entering his fifth season with the Yankees and has quickly become a fan favorite due to his 6’7″, 282-pound frame and impressive power at the plate. In 2017, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year after hitting .284 with 52 home runs and 114 RBI. He followed that up by being named an All-Star in 2018 and 2019.
While Judge has never been considered a vocal leader, those who know him say that he is respected by his teammates for his work ethic and dedication to the game. He was also selected as one of four team captains for the 2020 season, although that role was more ceremonial due to the shortened 60-game campaign.
“I’m excited for Aaron,” Jeter said of his successor. “He’s a great player with a lot of ability and I know he’ll be a great leader for this team.”

Cole made his debut in 2016 with the Yankees, going 7-10 with a 4.26 ERA in 27 starts as a rookie. He was traded to the Houston Astros in January 2018 and helped them win the World Series that year, going 15-5 with a 2.88 ERA and 276 strikeouts in 212 innings. Cole signed a nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees in December 2019 and helped them win the World Series in 2020, going 7-3 with a 2.84 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 74 innings.

The Rotation
The Yankees will have one of the best rotations in baseball in 2021. They are led by Gerrit Cole, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Houston Astros last year. Cole is a legitimate ace and will anchor the rotation. The other starters are Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, and J.A. Happ. Severino is a two-time All-Star and was the Yankees’ best pitcher before he got injured in 2019. Tanaka is a veteran starter who has been with the Yankees since 2014. He’s been very consistent throughout his career and is a dependable member of the rotation. Paxton was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in 2018 and he’s been very good for the Yankees when he’s healthy. He has electric stuff and is a strikeout machine. Happ was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline in 2018 and he’s been a solid contributor to the Yankees’ rotation since then. He doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but he knows how to pitch and gets results.
The Yankees also have some depth behind their starters with guys like Jordan Montgomery, Domingo German, Michael King, Deivi Garcia, Clarke Schmidt, and Jonathan Loaisiga. Montgomery had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and missed all of 2019, but he came back last year and pitched well for the Yankees out of the bullpen. He’ll compete for a spot in the rotation this spring training. German missed all of 2020 due to suspension but he was very good for the Yankees in 2019, winning 18 games while posting a 4.03 ERA. King came up last year and pitched well for the Yankees as a starting pitcher and reliever. He’ll most likely start the season in Triple-A but could be called up at some point during the season if there are injuries or struggles with other pitchers on the roster.. Garcia made his big league debut last September and looked good out of the bullpen.. He has a chance to make the Opening Day roster as a reliever.. Schmidt was drafted by the Yankees in 2017 and made his big league debut last September..
