The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise that had ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Former catcher Yogi Berra and outfielder Reggie Jackson are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame who spent significant time with the Yankees; Berra is also a member of MLB’s all-time team. All-time greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Whitey Ford are also honored with statues in Monument Park outside Yankee Stadium.

In 1976 home games resumed at Yankee Stadium which now had an increased capacity of more than 57,000 people while continuing to host other events like Pope John Paul II’s mass during his visit to New York City in October 1979 as well as hosting several World Series games most recently in 2009 when they won their 27th championship title.

Why are they no longer the captain?
The Yankees have had 27 different captains in their history. The first captain was Hal Chase, who served from 1910 to 1912. He was replaced by Home Run Baker, who served from 1913 to 1922. Babe Ruth took over as captain in 1922 and served until his retirement in 1935. Lou Gehrig then became captain and held the position until his forced retirement in 1939 due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Red Rolfe took over as captain and served until 1941 when he enlisted in the Army during World War II. After the war, Yogi Berra became captain and served for two years before stepping down in 1947.
The next captain was not named until 1949 when Billy Martin was given the honor. He served for one year before being replaced by Gil McDougald. McDougald held the position for eight years before he retired in 1960. Tony Kubek was named captain after McDougald’s retirement and held the position for three years before he too retired. Elston Howard became the next captain in 1963 and served until his retirement in 1968. Thurman Munson took over as captain in 1976 and held the position until his death in 1979.
Bob Lemon became interim manager after Munson’s death and was officially named captain later that year. He held the position for two years before retiring himself in 1981. Graig Nettles took over as captain and held the position for five years before retiring in 1984. Willie Randolph then became captain and held the position for four years before being replaced by Don Mattingly in 1991. Mattingly held the position until his retirement in 1995; he is currently the longest-serving Yankees captain of all time, having held the position for five years. Since Mattingly’s retirement, no player has been named official team captain of the New York Yankees organization.
