The Red Sox
The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have been rivals since the early 1900s. The two teams have the most heated rivalry in baseball, and their fans are passionate about their team’s success. The Red Sox have won the most World Series titles in baseball, and the Yankees have the most wins of any team in baseball.
History
The Red Sox–Yankees rivalry is one of the oldest, most famous and fiercest rivalries in American sports. For over 100 years, the two teams have been competitive on and off the field, with both teams having won a number of championships in that time.
The rivalry between the two teams can be traced back to the early days of baseball, when the Red Sox were known as the Boston Americans and the Yankees were known as the New York Highlanders. The two teams first faced each other in 1901, and the rivalry really began to heat up in the early 1910s when both teams were among the best in baseball.
The intensity of the rivalry reached its peak in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when the two teams faced each other in three consecutive World Series. The Yankees won all three series, cementing their reputation as one of baseball’s most dominant teams.
The rivalry took on a new dimension in 1946, when Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey hired former Yankees manager Joe McCarthy to lead his team. McCarthy had been very successful with the Yankees, winning seven World Series titles during his tenure. The hiring of McCarthy infuriated Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert, who saw it as a blatant attempt by Yawkey to copy his team’s success.
The rivalry was further fueled by an incident that took place during a game in 1967, when Red Sox player Carl Yastrzemski was knocked down by a pitch from Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton. The benches emptied and there was a lot of pushing and shoving, but no punches were thrown. After order was restored, Bouton walked to first base while being booed by the Fenway Park crowd.
The incident led to bad blood between the two teams for several years, but it wasn’t until 2003 that things really boiled over again. That year, the Yankees and Red Sox met in the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1978. The series went to seven games, with each team winning at home before the deciding game took place at Yankee Stadium. In one of the most thrilling finishes in baseball history, Aaron Boone hit a walk-off home run off Tim Wakefield to give the Yankees a 6-5 victory and a spot in the World Series.
The dramatic finish added more fuel to an already intense rivalry, and these days there is no love lost between these two historic franchises.

Perhaps their most famous rivals are the Boston Red Sox, with whom they share a historic rivalry that dates back to the early days of the sport. But the Yankees also have plenty of other rivals, both in and out of their division. Here’s a look at some of the team’s most notable rivalries.
Rivalry games against the Boston Red Sox are always hotly contested, and the two teams have engaged in some infamous brawls over the years. The Yankees’ rivalry with the Baltimore Orioles is also well-documented. The two teams have been facing off against each other since 1901, and they’ve been division rivals since 1969. The Orioles have had plenty of success against the Yankees over the years, but New York still holds an overall edge in the all-time series.
Outside of their division, the Yankees also have a long-standing rivalry with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two teams met in the World Series 11 times between 1941 and 1981, with the Yankees winning nine of those meetings. The Dodgers finally got revenge in 1988, when they defeated the Yankees in the World Series for their first championship in 25 years.
